1st October:

Whitehill 2 Selkirk 1

It was back to league business this week and Whitehill struggled to reproduce their Scottish Cup form as they faced up to bottom of the table Selkirk.
Whitehill: Tansey; Young, W.Kidd, Bruce, Thom; Sproule (Sinclair 86), A.Kidd, Herd, Manson: Somerville (Moffat 45), McIntosh (D.Robertson 80).
Welfare welcomed back Mike Bruce from injury and in goal Paul Tansey took over from Darren Walker who was away.
Selkirk’s intentions were clear – frustrate Whitehill, and as early as the 7th minute Burdett was booked for a foul on Sproule, the first of many cards in the match.
In 18 minutes, Whitehill’s Herd crossed for Sproule but his shot hit McIntosh. Then Somerville had a shot blocked.
In 35 minutes, Selkirk’s no 9 Gibson opened the scoring against the run of play. His shot from 35 yards seemed to bobble off the turf and beat Tansey at his near post.
Whitehill’s Manson nearly equalised but half time came with Whitehill trailing the basement club by 1-0.
At the interval the Welfare replaced Somerville with Moffat and within a minute this paid off when Manson was fouled. From Moffat’s free kick, Willie Kidd equalised with a shot from the edge of the box which appeared to take a deflection before burying itself behind keeper Dodds.
Soon after, Moffat had a shot saved.
Just as it looked like being a frustrating afternoon despite all their pressure, Whitehill took the lead. Dodds spilled a shot from Andrew Kidd and Jim Young was quickest to the ball to bury the rebound for his 5th goal in 5 games.
Sproule, Herd and Moffat all had chances to kill the game, while the home team had a heart stopping moment at the other end with a header just over, after a flurry of corners from Selkirk.
Deep into injury time, Manson set up substitute Dayne Robertson who rounded the keeper but hit the bar. The whistle sounded with Welfare grateful for the three points.
